In the big floodlit yard a black-furred Ursine, one of the

sub-bosses, was checking packing cases against a list.

He looked up. „So why ain‟t you outside?‟

„Visitors for Mr Nastur, boss,‟ said the guard importantly.

„Names?‟

„They didn‟t say.‟

The sub-boss sighed. „They didn‟t say. Number?‟

„How‟s that?‟

„How many?‟ said the sub-boss wearily. „You did count

them? Or were there more than three?‟

„No, just two,‟ said the guard, relieved. „Humans, a big

guy and a small dame.‟

„They got an appointment?‟

„How‟s that, boss?‟

The sub-boss sighed again. „I know, they didn‟t say. Why

don‟t you just chase them off? Mr Nastur doesn‟t want street

bums coming round bothering him.‟

„These aren‟t bums, boss. They arrived in this big black

limo and they‟re dressed real sharp. They look like they‟re

important.‟

The sub-boss frowned. He was no more anxious than the

guard to make any mistakes, not with Nastur in his present

foul mood.

„You‟re sure there are only two? Maybe they‟ve got an

army hidden in the limo.‟

The guard shook his head. „They sent the limo away.‟

„OK, let‟s take a look at them. Send them in.‟

The guard went out, and the sub-boss called over two

human bodyguards. „Visitors. Watch „em.‟

The bodyguards nodded, picked up their laser rifles and

stood flanking the door.

The sub-boss watched as the two strangers came into the

yard. The sentry retreated outside, closing the door behind

him. The visitors, whoever they were, were trapped. They

might find getting out a lot harder than getting in.

The sub-boss studied the two strangers. The woman,

clearly the one in charge, glanced casually around the

yard. She didn‟t seem impressed. The big man, standing

protectively behind her, looked around as well, but his

survey was very different. The sub-boss saw him checking

the number of guards, their position, the weapons they

carried, escape routes and cover in case of trouble. This

was a professional.

The sub-boss said bluntly, „You armed?‟

The woman said, „Of course we‟re armed.‟

He nodded towards a nearby packing case. „On top of the

case there. Slowly.‟

Covered by the two bodyguards, the woman took a slim

blaster from her bag and tossed it on to the packing case.

The big man took a heavy hand blaster from under his arm

and put it carefully beside the woman‟s one.

The sub-boss approached and without being told the big

man raised his arms, holding them out from his sides.

Quickly and efficiently the sub-boss patted him down. He

turned to the woman. „You too, lady.‟

The woman raised her arms. „You can look but don‟t

touch.‟

The sub-boss walked around her, until he was satisfied

that there was no sign of the bulge of even the smallest of

blasters.

„OK. Now what do you want here?‟

„We want to see Nastur.‟

„Who does?‟

„We‟ll tell him that.‟

The sub-boss shook his head. „It doesn‟t work like that. I

gotta have a name the boss will recognize. Your name, a

contact name, whatever.‟

The woman said, „Tell Nastur Miss Dragon and Mr

Christopher are here to see him. Tell him we come from Emil

Malek.‟

The sub-boss said, „You better be telling the truth, lady.‟

He turned and walked into the cavernous warehouse.

He found Nastur is his usual place in the back, sitting in

his special chair, surrounded by boxes, crates and barrels.

His two underbosses, both human, were with him.
